Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We want to be transparent with you! We have listed our most common questions below, but if you have a question that's not answers, please let us know by emailing tennesseebackpaincenter@gmail.com.

How does Tennessee Back Pain Center differ from most chiropractic offices?

Tennessee Back Pain Center is an innovative Chiropractic clinic that is very different than all other chiropractors in Middle Tennessee. We consider ourselves a hybrid between a traditional chiropractor and a physical therapist. Meaning each visit you are going to get some chiropractic care (adjustments, instrument-assisted soft tissue, etc.) as well as some rehabilitative exercises to help strengthen your muscles and keep you out of pain. This style of adjustments + exercise has been proven in the research to provide the most-effective, long-lasting results.

Why should I go to the Chiropractor?

Chiropractors are a form of conservative treatment - meaning no drugs, no surgeries, and almost no risks! We consider ourselves neuro-musculoskeletal specialists who can treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, joints, and more! Therefore, if you are suffering from any kind of injury, stiffness, tightness, or functional deficit, we would love to help you. This is not limited to just the back or neck region either. And if we decide that we there is a different specialist that can help you more, we are going to refer you to the right place!

Are adjustments safe?

Research has proven that adjustments are a safe form of treatment. In fact, it is one of the safest treatments for musculoskeletal conditions because it is drug-free and non-invasive. Some people do experience a little muscle soreness after an adjustment, but that is really the only true risk. Additionally, the techniques that Dr. Porter and Dr. Bates use are not like the ones you see on Youtube. Instead, we use more speed and less force to deliver the most comfortable adjustment that we can.

How does an adjustment work?

An adjustment (also called spinal manipulation) takes a restricted or "stuck" joint and restores normal range of motion. This includes taking the joint to its end-range of motion and providing a little force into that motion. But increased motion isn't the only benefit of being adjusted. Adjustments can improve joint mobility, decrease pain, reduce muscle tension, enhance recovery time, decrease inflammation, improve communication with your brain, and more! Adjustments can result in an audible "pop," which is simply just a difference in air pressure across the joint when it gets adjusted. Similar to the pop you hear when you release a balloon.

What conditions does Tennessee Back Pain Center treat?

Tennessee Back Pain Center can treat a variety of conditions and much more than just your back. These conditions include (but are not limited to) - plantar fasciitis, meniscus tear, arthritis, bunions, tennis elbow, rotator cuff injuries, disc herniations, ACL injuries, bicep tendonitis, shin splints, tight hip flexors, piriformis syndrome, pinched nerve, golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel, ankle sprain, TMJ dysfunction, pregnancy pains, and so much more!

Do you take insurance?

Yes! Currently, we are in-network with Aetna, Ambetter, Anthem, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Medicare, and United Healthcare/UMR. We are constantly trying to get in-network with more insurance companies, so stay tuned for more to come. If we don't accept your insurance or if you don't have medical insurance, we do offer an affordable cash rate! Our new patient rate is $100 and our existing patient rate is $60. This is an all-inclusive fee for adjustments, soft tissue work, dry needling, exercises, etc. ** We do not accept Medicaid Patients**

Do you treat children?

Yes we do! When it comes to newborns, we tend to work with developmental milestones more than analyzing mobility and joint motion. As the kiddo gets older, we start adding in more and more treatment options. Especially when kids become teenagers, we watch out for scoliosis patterns and preventing scoliosis from worsening if possible.

Can you help with pregnancy pains?

Absolutely! Pregnancy comes with a lot of changes to your musculoskeletal system - your ligaments become lax, your low back carries more weight, and you need a strong pelvic floor to prepare for birth. The good news is we can help! Research shoes that pregnant women who receive regular chiropractic care have less pregnancy-related symptoms. Before or during pregnancy, we can help calm down your muscles and use rehabilitative exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor. The further along you are, the more we will focus on your pelvis - to rebalance your muscles, relax your round ligament, or even help widen your pelvic canal to prepare for the baby. After childbirth, our focus will switch to more pelvic floor rehab, diminishing diastasis recti, and regaining strength in your muscles. During the entire pregnancy, getting adjusted is still completely safe. We modify adjustments based on how far along you are, avoiding force going through the belly, lightening up the thrust, and modifying set-up. We would also love to co-manage care with your OBGYN and PCP to provide the best care for you. Let us help make your pregnancy journey more comfortable and less stressful, allowing for a smoother childbirth and quicker recovery.

How long are your appointments?

Our team at Tennessee Back Pain Center strives to be thorough with everything we do! Which is why our appointments are longer than most. Your first visit is around 45-60 minutes, which includes a history, movement assessment, examination, and treatment. Any follow-up visit is 20-30 minutes. This is important to us because we want to listen to your story, get to know what your goals are, and truly understand your pain. We care about YOU, want to listen to YOU, and truly get to know YOU.

Once I begin care, do I need to keep coming back?

Nope! Here at Tennessee Back Pain Center, there are no treatment plans. Meaning we aren't going to sell you on a package that costs thousands of dollars for you to be seen 2-3x/week for X number of weeks. We base the frequency of our treatments on how you are feeling, responding to care, and more! We decide together what fits your schedule and based on the severity of your condition. If you like maintenance care, you can come in as often as you wish. But our ultimate goal is to equip you with exercises and tools you need to get out of pain, stay out of pain, and get out of our office! We love our patients, but we also love to graduate you from care so you can continue doing the things you love!
