🧠 Improve Neck Mobility & Reduce Pain with Cervical CARs

If you spend a lot of time looking down at your phone or computer, you’re not alone — and your neck probably feels it. Many people experience stiffness, tension, or even headaches that come from poor cervical (neck) mobility. One of the best ways to keep your neck healthy and moving well is with an exercise called Cervical CARs, short for Controlled Articular Rotations (CAR).

What Are Cervical CARs?

Cervical CARs are gentle, controlled movements that take your neck through its full range of motion — flexion, extension, rotation, and side bending — while keeping the rest of your body still.

The goal is to move intentionally and slowly, exploring how your neck moves without pain or compensation from your shoulders or upper back.

Think of it like “oil for the joints.” When you perform CARs regularly, you help lubricate the neck joints, improve coordination, and maintain mobility over time.

How to Perform Cervical CARs

  1. Sit or stand tall with good posture.

  2. Keep your shoulders relaxed and still.

  3. Slowly tuck your chin toward your chest.

  4. Begin to rotate your head in a slow, circular motion — bringing your ear toward your shoulder, then looking up, then toward the other shoulder, and back down.

  5. Move as far as you comfortably can without pain or forcing it.

  6. Reverse the direction and repeat.

Pro Tip: The key word is controlled — don’t rush the movement. Slow, mindful motion builds better control and joint health than quick or jerky turns.

At Tennessee Back Pain Center, we use movement-based care to help patients not just feel better — but move better. Cervical CARs are a simple, powerful tool to keep your joints healthy between visits and support your chiropractic adjustments.
