Piriformis Crossover Stretch: A Simple Way to Relieve Hip and Sciatic Pain

If you’re dealing with deep hip pain, tightness in your glutes, or even symptoms that travel down your leg, your piriformis muscle could be part of the problem.

What Is the Piriformis Muscle?

The piriformis is a small muscle located deep in the buttock, behind the gluteus maximus. It plays an important role in stabilizing the hip and helping rotate the leg outward. However, when it becomes tight or inflamed, it can irritate the nearby sciatic nerve, leading to a condition commonly referred to as piriformis syndrome.

Signs Your Piriformis May Be Tight

You may benefit from piriformis stretching if you experience:

  • Deep aching in the buttock

  • Pain that radiates down the back of the leg

  • Increased discomfort when sitting for long periods

  • Tightness or reduced mobility in the hips

How to Perform the Piriformis Crossover Stretch

  1. Sit with your feet flat on the ground and your back straight.

  2. Place the ankle of the leg you want to stretch on over the opposite knee (like a figure 4 position)

  3. Keeping your chest tall, gently hinge forward at your hips, bringing your chest to your knees.

  4. Hold for 1-2 seconds

  5. Repeat 10x

  6. Repeat on the opposite side.

Move slowly and avoid forcing the stretch. Breathe deeply and relax into the stretch.
