When we think about spine health, we often focus on what we should be doing: good posture, lifting with our legs, and maybe stretching. But what if the biggest threat to your spine isn't something you're doing wrong, but something you're not doing at all?
The truth is, one of the worst things you can do for your back is to be sedentary. Your spine is built for movement, and just like any other part of your body, if you don't use it, you lose it.
A Spine That Doesn’t Move, Doesn’t Work Well
Your spine is a complex and amazing structure made up of bones (vertebrae), discs, ligaments, and muscles. The discs between your vertebrae act as shock absorbers, and they are like sponges. They need movement to stay healthy.
When you move and bend your spine, the discs are able to pump in nutrients and pump out waste products. This process is called imbibition. Think of it like a sponge that needs to be squeezed and released to absorb water. If your discs aren't getting this pumping action, they become dehydrated, stiff, and more prone to injury and degeneration.
If you're experiencing back pain or stiffness, we can help! We can assess your spinal health, identify areas of stiffness or restriction, and provide adjustments and recommendations to help you get moving again. Schedule an appointment on our website at www.tennesseebackpaincenter.com!
