If you spend long hours sitting at a desk, driving, or bending forward throughout the day, you might be experiencing some low back pain. These positions place extra stress on the lower spine and can lead to stiffness, muscle tightness, and pain. One of the simplest and most effective ways to counteract this is through standing lumbar extensions.
A standing lumbar extension helps reverse the effects of prolonged sitting and forward flexion, reducing pressure on the lumbar discs, decreasing muscle tension, and increasing low back range of motion.
How to Perform Standing Lumbar Extensions
Stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart.
Place your hands on your lower back or hips for support.
Gently arch backward, extending your spine without forcing the movement.
Hold for 1-2 seconds, then return to neutral.
Repeat 10 times, several times a day—especially after sitting for long periods.
Always move within a comfortable range and stop if you experience sharp pain.
While exercises like standing lumbar extensions can help reduce discomfort, persistent or recurring back pain may be a sign of an underlying spinal issue. Give Tennessee Back Pain Center a call at (615)-900-5187 or visit our website at www.tennesseebackpaincenter.com
